Bruce Lane: Channel and Mobile Sales Manager at Telestream

“Mastering relevant skills and surrounding yourself with a community of successful people provides never ending opportunities.” A motto that Bruce Lane has lived by and is proof of concept.

Bruce Lane, currently of Telestream, has run the table on the engineering and the tech side of the broadcast industry.

Starting out with in Master Control. Then moved into broadcast mobile trucks. From there he spent the next twenty plus years with Grass Valley.  Eventually, moving to Techtronics which is now part of Telestream.

Throughout all that time he had to continually evolve his skills and his technical understanding to keep pace with the industry’s technical evolution from analog to digital to IP.

Key Takeaways:

  • The broadcast industry has undergone major technological shifts, especially the move from analog to digital, and more recently toward IP-based infrastructure and precision timing protocols.
  • Mobile truck companies like NEP and Game Creek play a central role in producing large-scale live broadcasts (e.g., the Olympics, Academy Awards, major sports).
  • Continuous learning and education are essential because the technology and workflows in broadcasting keep evolving.
  • Mentorship and networking are repeatedly emphasized as key to building a career—seeking guidance and making connections can open doors.
  • Technology has become more “democratized,” with tools like Final Cut Pro enabling more people to create high-quality content.
  • Career paths in broadcasting are often non-linear; being open-minded, passionate, and willing to explore different roles can lead to growth across many types of jobs (engineering, operations, camera, sales, etc.).
