PODCAST: Sound Producer Karl DelPiano
EPISODE SYNOPSIS:
In this episode, Joe Scacciaferro talks with long time broadcast sound producer Karl Del Piano. Coming from a background in music, Karl was able to take that skill and successfully transition into entertainment broadcasting specializing in a process known as “sweetening.” Similar to follies in film, Karl was tasked with matching appropriate audio to raw footage and help tell the desired story. “Once you see it (the picture) it dictates what you need to hear…if you didn’t notice (the sound) you did it perfectly.” As Joe notes, this was done in days before canned music and developments of new technology which meant long hours and hard work, but the results were well worth it. As both men discuss, audio is critical for telling a good story.
IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT:
- Karl’s background and career
- The process of “sweetening” in production
- Importance of audio in television production
